Match This Week
Fulham v Charlton
Monday Oct. 16, 2006.
(match played Oct. 14, 2006)
Here’s something you don’t see often:
With the game scoreless, Juan Pablo Angel missed an penalty kick for Aston Villa. I mean really missed it, it was several feet wide of the top right corner. Now that’s not very unusual, but just several minutes later he scored an own goal for the Spurs in the 76th minute. It was off of a corner kick, short of the near post. No Spur player was near it and the Villa goal keeper was stepping up to make the easy catch, however for some reason Angel ran in to head the ball out of touch but it went in his goal instead. He must have felt awful.
All was not lost. The penalty kick was the result of a red card on the Spurs so they were playing a man down and Gareth Barry got the equalizer for Villa in the 81st minute.
The first half was fairly even except for Wigan’s early goal - 5th minute Leighton Baines (D) from free-kick, taken short and set-up from just outside 18 yard box right of the D.
The second half mostly belonged to Man Utd. In a five minute span the Red Devils netted two goals, one by Nemanja Vidic - a header off of a corner kick, 62′ - and the other by Louis Saha. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put the game away with his goal in added time.

The last week or so has been slow for me soccer-wise as the top European leagues took a break for Euro 2008 qualifying. The Premier League starts up again this weekend and there is an MLS match on TV.
